Patients gave written informed consent to all aspects of the study, and all procedures were approved by the ethics committee of the University of Leipzig. They affect metabolism and have anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Macrophage infiltration into adipose tissue is believed to be at least partly mediated by increased expression and secretion of inflammatory cytokines involved in macrophage recruitment and activation, such as MCP1 and CSF1. Failure of cells to appropriately respond to insulin-mediated induction of glucose uptake, resulting in increased blood sugar levels and possibly type 2 diabetes.
