Part of the exceptionally active 2022 season, Earl was the fifth tropical cyclone of the year, the third hurricane, and the second major hurricane of the season. Local media reported scattered power outages from Earl, which was a Category 2 hurricane when it passed by the island overnight. It had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, but was no longer a threat to become a major hurricane (winds of at least 111 mph).
